Milady Raves

Global underground rave series organized by Remilia Corporation

Milady Raves are a series of underground music events organized by Remilia Corporation that began in New York City in 2021. The events combine breakcore and hyperpop performance, running typically from midnight to sunrise. Initially rooted in the New York crypto and downtown art scenes, the series expanded internationally to include events in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Seoul. The Milady Raves series is closely related to, and partially overlaps with, the 33reisen event series.

Concept and format

Milady Raves were conceived as in-person extensions of the Milady Maker online community, framed as holder meetups staged in collaboration with local underground music scenes. The official Milady Maker project page described the events as "warehouse raves put on in major cities... in collaboration with their local underground scenes."[1] Each event typically featured local acts alongside DJs performing breakcore and hyperpop, and ran through the night. Remilia livestreamed events via the Milady Village Discord server for attendees who could not be present in person.

A recurring feature of early Milady Raves was their connection to NFT-gated access. At several New York events, entry required attendees to verify Milady Maker ownership on-chain via a MetaMask signature at the door.[2] Later events, including Milady Rave Praxis, moved toward open and free-entry formats.

Each event in the series was commemorated with a hand-designed poster and minted as an NFT in the Rave Posters collection on Foundation, providing an on-chain record of the series' history.[3]

History

New york origins

The first Milady Rave was held on November 5, 2021 in New York City in conjunction with NFT.NYC in 2021. A journalist who attended recalled the event being shut down by police after roughly an hour.[4] Further New York events followed through 2022, several of which were also cut short by police. The April 30, 2022 edition ran for approximately three hours before being shut down; the March 4, 2022 edition lasted about two hours.[3] A Halloween edition on October 28, 2022, featuring a set by Ecco2k, was shut down due to overcrowding and relocated to another Manhattan venue.[5]

Milady rave praxis

On June 10, 2023, Remilia held Milady Rave Praxis at 133 Mulberry Street in Little Italy, Manhattan, in a basement venue beneath a restaurant. The event was offered with free entry and was sponsored by Praxis, a network city project.[6] Performers included The Hellp, 2hollis — in their first ever live performance — and Sausha.[7] The event drew wide attention and became one of the more culturally noted Milady Raves, in part due to the significance of 2hollis's debut performance.

International expansion

The series moved to London in September 2022, with Milady Rave London held on September 10, 2022, featuring performances by Rit and Oatmilkandcodeine and DJ sets by Kerosene, Soulgem, Zlaya, and Vaermina, held at Bonkler Bar on Binky Street.[8] A second London edition, titled "Milady Rave London: Resurrected," followed in December 2022.

In April 2023, Milady Rave Tokyo took place as the opening event of Remilia-Con 2023, a three-day series in Shibuya that also included the "Momentary" gallery art exhibition and the launch of the Bonkler NFT collection. It was the first Milady Rave held in Asia and the first to be formally announced via press release.[9]

Relationship to 33reisen

Following the London editions of Milady Rave, Remilia's London-based event programming evolved into the 33reisen series, which adopted a distinct name and branding while retaining the same core aesthetic and many of the same performers. Charlotte Fang described the two series as related but distinct concepts: Milady Raves developed adjacent to crypto conferences with an indie sleaze aesthetic, while 33reisen focused on synthesizing Japanese and Chinese fashion subcultures with London's breakcore underground. The 33reisen series began in June 2023 and has continued as Remilia's primary recurring event format in London.
