33reisen is a global rave series organized by Remilia Corporation that combines breakcore music, hyperpop, cosplay culture, and Y2K internet aesthetics into immersive nightlife events. Described as "Remilia England Internet Social Event Night" on promotional materials, the series began in 2022 under the initial "Milady Rave" branding before adopting the 33reisen name in 2023.[1]

The events feature performances by breakcore and hyperpop artists alongside fashion pop-ups that celebrate the intersection of anime aesthetics, digital subcultures, and experimental electronic music. A distinctive feature of 33reisen events is the free entry offered to attendees in full cosplay or wearing lolita or gyaru fashion, emphasizing the series' connection to Japanese fashion movements.[2]

Concept and philosophy

The 33reisen series was conceived as a cultural bridging project to connect emerging fashion subcultures with underground music scenes. The core concept combines three key elements: hyperpop and breakcore music, free entry for cosplayers and J-fashion styles (particularly lolita and gyaru), and alternative independent fashion pop-ups.[3]

A primary goal of the series has been to integrate London's fashion school students, particularly the foreign Chinese student population, into the city's local underground music scene. This cross-cultural approach aims to synthesize emerging subcultures centered around Japanese and Chinese fashion influences with established underground electronic music communities.[1]

In an interview, Remilia founder, Charlotte Fang, explained: "We arrived on a model of raves plus pop-ups both because this subculture Remilia is nurturing combined fashion and music, but also because the rave replicates the freeform, anything goes, half-anonymous experience of the internet. It's a natural fit."[1]

Name and branding

The name "33reisen" combines "33," an angel number with spiritual significance, with "Reisen," a reference to Reisen Udongein Inaba, a character from the Touhou Project series of games. This naming convention parallels Remilia Corporation's own name, which references the character Remilia Scarlet from the same game series.[4]

The series' promotional materials typically feature a distinctive logo consisting of the word "Reisen" encircled by a chain design with a crown at the top and a cross at the bottom. Event flyers maintain a consistent pixel dithered aesthetic with anime-inspired imagery, creating a recognizable visual identity across different locations and dates.[1]

The 33reisen events utilized the 33.reisen domain to announce venues day-of. This website would later transform into a livestream of the rave when the event was active, extending the experience to online participants.[2]

Musical programming

33reisen curation showcased a distinctive fusion of breakcore and hyperpop, creating a bridge between different underground music scenes. In discussing the musical direction of Remilia's rave events, Fang has noted an interest in "the side of breakcore that trades in breaks for high BPM techno elements: gabber, schranz, freetekno, hardstyle. Or on the inverse, hard techno that introduces mashup energy."[1]

Regular performers at 33reisen events include:

  • Kerosene - London-based breakcore DJ and cosplayer
  • Ikologies - Breakcore DJ and cosplayer
  • SinTheology - Chinese-based breakcore DJ and fashion influencer
  • Temma - London-based breakcore producer
  • 020Baby - London-based breakcore producer

Fashion and cosplay

A core element of 33reisen events is their integration of Japanese and Chinese fashion subcultures, particularly lolita and gyaru styles. Promotional materials consistently advertised free entry for attendees in full cosplay or J-fashion, creating incentives for fashion-forward participation.

The events also often featured fashion pop-ups from alternative and independent brands aligned with emerging subcultural aesthetics. This approach created spaces where fashion school students and underground music enthusiasts can interact, fostering cross-pollination between different cultural scenes.[1]

Fang has described the fashion aspect of the events as representing "the emerging trend reviving and extending the style" of Y2K fashion, noting that it is "a modern hybridized interpretation, part of the general Y2K revival trend across fashion and egirl culture."[1]

The 33reisen series has evolved in parallel with other Remilia Corporation event concepts. While 33reisen focused on the synthesis of J-fashion, C-fashion, and breakcore in underground venues, the Milady Raves series developed as a separate concept adjacent to crypto conferences with an indie sleaze aesthetic.[1]

More recently, following a collaboration with influential Japanese street fashion publication FRUiTS Magazine, the event concept has evolved into the Remilia x FRUiTS rave series. This partnership represents a significant development in Remilia's cultural programming, connecting their digital-native aesthetics with an established institution in Japanese street fashion documentation.[1]

Global presence

The 33reisen series expanded beyond its London origins to include events in Tokyo and Seoul. Each location maintains the core aesthetic and philosophical elements while adapting to local cultural contexts and music scenes.[1]

When discussing the Tokyo and Seoul iterations of the event series, Fang noted regional variations in the breakcore scene, observing that "Korea's breakcore scene is small. I noticed it has a taste towards heavier noise elements and BPM pushing above 180," while suggesting that the Japanese scene showed more influence from otaku speedcore traditions.[1]
