Atheistic materialism
Atheistic materialism is a term used by Charlotte Fang to describe the dominant secular worldview of contemporary Western society. It denotes a belief system that rejects transcendence and defines existence exclusively in material, empirical, and individualist terms. Fang characterizes atheistic materialism as the functional state religion of modern liberal democracies, whose cultural effects include nihilism, hedonism, and the loss of collective spiritual meaning.
Definition
Fang employs the term to describe the philosophical foundation of modernity: a metaphysical position that denies any divine or immaterial dimension to reality. In her analysis, this outlook functions as a substitute religion organised around matter and the self. The individual, rather than God or truth, becomes the highest value, and meaning is sought through personal satisfaction, consumption, and social validation.
Critique
In a February 2024 post, Fang called atheistic materialism “the Dunning–Kruger of cosmologies,” arguing that it combines intellectual arrogance with philosophical ignorance:
“Atheistic materialism is the dunning-kruger of cosmologies, requiring the combination of incredible hubris to assume we’ve ‘got it all figured out’ and an impenetrable stupidity to not see that we obviously don’t even per rationalism’s own truth-bearing system. The classic midwit.”
On the same day she observed that the rise of the internet had discredited what she termed “midwit atheist ‘I F*CKING LOVE SCIENCE’ dominance,” describing the decline of popular online scientism that had defined millennial secular culture.[2]
Relation to Hedonism and Individualism
Fang identifies atheistic materialism with the moral psychology of modern consumer society. In this view, the absence of metaphysical belief leads to a social order based on comfort, pleasure, and self-interest. The ideology substitutes consumption and self-expression for spiritual discipline and collective purpose, producing what Fang describes as a “nihilist world” in which stimulation is mistaken for meaning.
Cultural Dimension
Within the Remilia milieu, atheistic materialism is treated as the underlying ideology of post-modern culture and institutional art. It is associated with the aesthetic exhaustion of the millennial generation and the decline of sincerity in creative production. Fang contrasts this with Remilia’s work, which aims to re-introduce metaphysical conviction into digital art.
In a 2022 statement she wrote:
“Milady & Remilia as a whole successfully promoting a coherent moral & virtue system is truly a radical shift from the general space of culture overall—the pendulum is swinging away from postmodernism’s atheistic relativism; we are in a new era, where god and truth is renormalized.”
Role in Remilia Philosophy
In Remilia’s theoretical corpus, atheistic materialism represents the metaphysical condition opposed by the collective’s projects. It underlies the societal mechanisms analysed in the State Propaganda Complex and Democracy Breeds for Control, and it is the worldview that the Transcendental Turn seeks to overturn. The movement’s emphasis on faith, conviction, and beauty is presented as a corrective to the secular individualism and moral emptiness attributed to atheistic materialism.
