Yasumasa Yonehara
Yasumasa Yonehara (born 1959), also known as Yone or YONE, is a Japanese photographer and magazine editor based in Tokyo. He has also worked as a producer, director and DJ. His work spans instant-camera photography, magazine editing, and painting on photographs.[1][2]
Career and practice
Born in Kumamoto Prefecture, Yonehara established the magazine Egg in 1995 and became associated with Japanese street-culture and fashion publishing. Tokyo Fashion described him as the magazine's founding editor and as instrumental in bringing Shibuya's kogal and gyaru subculture into the mainstream. His work in the late 1990s was also connected with the Urahara street-fashion boom, and he maintained an office in Harajuku from 1995.[1][3]
His work includes photography, magazine publishing and writing about Japanese fashion and pop culture. His photographic practice is strongly associated with the Cheki instant camera, and published profiles describe images of women as well as work photographing men in a similar style. He began painting on his own and others' photographs in 2017, and has exhibited photographic work internationally since 2004.[1][2][3]
Public projects
In 2011, Yonehara created One Snap For Love, a photography-based fundraising project for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March. At a Harajuku event held with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and 6%DOKIDOKI, participants could have their portraits taken with a Cheki camera in exchange for a 500-yen donation to earthquake relief.[4]
By July 2012, Yonehara was operating Moshi Moshi Kawaii Harajuku, a souvenir shop near Takeshita Dori. The shop sold goods connected with Harajuku and kawaii culture, displayed Yonehara's photographs and included space for events with personalities associated with the Harajuku scene.[5]
