Background

Windows on the World was a restaurant complex opened in 1976 occupying the 107th floor of 1 World Trade Center, the North Tower of the original World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. Designed by Milton Glaser and others, it became one of the most celebrated and highest-grossing restaurants in the United States, known for its panoramic views of New York City and the surrounding region.[1] The restaurant closed following the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and reopened in 1996 after an extensive renovation.

Windows on the World was destroyed on the morning of September 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower between the 93rd and 99th floors. Approximately 72 restaurant employees and 91 guests who were present that morning perished in the attack. The restaurant has never reopened, and its loss became one of the more symbolically charged details of the September 11 attacks — a place associated with luxury, altitude, and the optimism of New York City's skyline, destroyed along with the towers themselves.
