Redacted Remilio Babies, commonly known as Remilio, is a collection of 10,000 generative profile picture NFTs created by Remilia Corporation and launched on the Ethereum blockchain in August 2022.[1] The collection extends the neochibi aesthetic established by Milady Maker, repositioning it with what Remilia termed "youthful J.I.T. energy, schizophrenic reactionary aesthetics, and digital sales terrorism." Described as the canonical "little brother" to Milady, Remilio channels boyish edginess and zoomer internet culture through the same algorithmic design framework that distinguished its predecessor.

The project emerged just three months after the May 2022 Milady cancellation controversy, serving as Remilia's first major release in the post-cancelled era. Where Milady explores Japanese street fashion subcultures through a feminine aesthetic of spiritual purity, Remilio adopts a masculine counterpart aesthetic characterized by aspirational finance culture, internet reactionary humor, and adolescent irreverence. The collection demonstrates Remilia's approach to creating multiple character archetypes within a unified aesthetic universe, similar to character rosters maintained by companies like Sanrio or Disney.

Development and origins

FODKORP’s Early Milady Derivative, 2021.

Redacted Remilio Babies originated from a Milady derivative created by FODKORP, a Remilia Corporation member known for the 3DTestosterone.net project. FODKORP had created one of the earliest Milady derivatives, predating the Milady Maker NFT itself, which Charlotte Fang used personally while running the Milady project. This derivative served as the conceptual foundation for what would become the Remilio collection.

According to Remilia, the project was conceived as an effective "second generation" evolving the paradigm first established with Milady Maker. The collective had desired a second character for some time but deliberately waited until discovering a genuine need and conceptual framework before development. The ability to introduce a distinct character archetype while maintaining algorithmic design consistency represented a technical and creative challenge that Remilia sought to demonstrate was possible within the generative NFT medium.

Remilio, 2022.

Remilia artist Ulenka Pachinko illustrated the collection, extending Fodkorp's original derivative into a complete 10,000-piece generative system in collaboration with Charlotte Fang and other Remilia members. The development process incorporated lessons learned from building Milady and from Remilia's contributions to other NFT projects in the intervening year.

The project's conceptual framework centered on creating a masculine counterpart to Milady that would attract and organize a distinct digital tribe while maintaining coherence with Remilia's broader aesthetic and philosophical principles. The timing of the release, shortly after the cancellation controversy, positioned Remilio as a demonstration of Remilia's resilience and continued creative output in the post-cancelled period.

Design and aesthetic

Remilio employs the neochibi visual framework established by Milady Maker but redirects it toward masculine youth culture and internet reactionary aesthetics. Each Remilio is procedurally generated from trait categories that deliberately contrast with Milady's Japanese street fashion inspirations. Where Milady references Lolita, Harajuku, and Gyaru subcultures, Remilio incorporates what Remilia described as "YouTube-minded Financial Aspirationalism" featuring luxury watches and hypercar backgrounds, streetwear in the mode popularized in Philippines internet culture and among Drake fans, and vacation home locales befitting a future trust fund adolescent's family trips.

The collection lampoons NFT and cryptocurrency culture directly, incorporating satirical references to the same communities it emerged from. This self-reflexive approach distinguishes Remilio from more earnest PFP projects, positioning it as simultaneous participation in and critique of crypto-native status signaling.

Trait system

The generative system includes several distinctive trait categories. Remilios feature various hairstyles, facial expressions, clothing, accessories, and backgrounds algorithmically combined to produce individual characters. A notable addition to the Milady formula is the "Friends" system, which places small mascot characters in corners of the composition hidden beyond what displays in a circular profile picture format. With over 100 available options, these friends provide humorous citations and easter eggs revealed only when viewing the full square image. Friends possess different rarities but do not impact the collection's grading system.

The collection embraces a boyish aesthetic and expands its range of fantastical races, adding diversity to the rarest Remilio designs beyond the human-centric defaults. This approach builds on Milady's occasional non-human variants while making such variations more central to the Remilio identity.

Overlays

An example of the Racism Overlay.

A distinctive feature of Remilio is the integration of overlays directly into the NFT metadata. This design decision formalized a practice that had emerged organically in the Milady community, where holders shared transparent images with meme text captions that could be added to profile pictures. By incorporating overlays as native trait options, Remilio acknowledged and institutionalized this memetic behavior.

Notable overlays include the "RACISM" overlay, which Remilia described as preemptively lampooning an inevitable cancellation attempt. This self-aware embrace of controversy as aesthetic material reflects Remilia's post-cancelled positioning and willingness to incorporate potential criticism directly into the work itself.

Swag Score

Similar to Milady's Drip Score system, each Remilio receives a "Swag Score" evaluating aesthetic coherence and trait combinations. According to the project documentation, this score is generated by a proprietary mathematical formula that Remilia humorously claimed was created by a Nobel prize-winning professor and fleet of graduate students. The Swag Score provides a hierarchical value assessment visible at a glance, emphasizing aesthetic judgment over purely mechanical rarity calculations.

Launch

Redacted Remilio Babies launched on August 11, 2022, approximately three months after the May 2022 Milady cancellation controversy.[2] The timing positioned the release as Remilia's first major project in the post-cancelled era, testing whether the collective's audience and cultural capital had survived the controversy intact.

The collection consists of 10,000 NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain using the ERC-721 token standard. Unlike Milady's gradual eight-month mint period, details about Remilio's specific minting timeline and pricing structure have been less prominently documented in available sources, though the initial mint price has been reported as approximately 0.108 ETH per NFT.

The project demonstrated Remilia's continued market viability following the cancellation, establishing Remilio as a distinct character archetype within the Remilia ecosystem while maintaining connection to the established Milady community.

Cultural positioning

Remilio's conceptual framework deliberately contrasts with Milady's aesthetic of feminine spiritual purity. Where Milady is characterized as secluded, innocent, and inward-focused, Remilio is outward-directed and aggressive in its humor. The collection channels what Remilia described as "thoughts outside of the self, the room, the house" while maintaining childish naivety at its core.

This masculine counterpart positioning serves multiple functions. It acts as a receptacle for the boyish edginess and crudeness that exists within Remilia's community but sits uncomfortably alongside Milady's pursuit of aesthetic purity. Simultaneously, it demonstrates Remilia's ability to maintain coherent character archetypes across multiple generative collections, establishing parameters for potential future character additions to the Remilia roster.

The satirical edge distinguishes Remilio from both Milady's more earnest aesthetic exploration and from the broader NFT market's tendency toward empty status signaling. By incorporating critique of finance culture, YouTube thumbnail aesthetics, and crypto community absurdities directly into the collection's design language, Remilio operates in what Remilia termed "lucid metairony."

The project embodies Remilia's principle of post-authorship, with attribution to Remilia Corporation as an entity rather than individual artists. The official documentation provides a detailed "authorship hash" listing contributors including Charlotte Fang, Michael Dragovic, Lemaire, Surfy, Reginald, Crimea, Azu, Lurker, Ula, Atticus, and Onno Whitemoor, among others, while maintaining that assets, illustration, web design, smart contracts, and marketing functioned as collaborative efforts.

Reception and legacy

Redacted Remilio Babies established itself as a successful companion collection to Milady Maker, attracting its own distinct community while remaining connected to the broader Remilia ecosystem. The collection's self-aware humor and satirical positioning resonated with segments of crypto culture that appreciated its reflexive critique of the same spaces it occupied.

The project demonstrated that Remilia's cultural influence and market position had survived the May 2022 cancellation controversy, with Remilio holders adopting the #REMILIONAIRE hashtag as a community identifier. The collection's floor price and trading volume indicated sustained interest beyond initial speculation, establishing Remilio as a lasting addition to the NFT landscape rather than a temporary derivative.

As Remilia's second major PFP collection, Remilio validated the collective's approach to creating multiple character archetypes within a unified aesthetic framework. This success established precedent for how generative NFT projects might develop character rosters and distinct community segments while maintaining brand coherence.

All Remilio branding, assets, and NFTs are copylefted under the Viral Public License, reflecting Remilia's broader commitment to open remix culture and post-authorship principles.
