Canal St Subway is a background trait in the Redacted Remilio Babies NFT collection, depicting the Canal Street subway station hub area from The Darkness (Starbreeze Studios, 2007).
Background
The Darkness is a first-person shooter developed by Starbreeze Studios and published by 2K Games for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, released in June 2007. Based on the Top Cow comic series of the same name, the game follows Jackie Estacado, a Mafia hitman who on his 21st birthday inherits a supernatural entity called the Darkness, granting him demonic powers.[1]
The Canal Street subway station serves as one of two hub areas in the game — alongside Fulton Street — connecting the game's linear mission sections. The station is characterized by its white-tiled walls, fluorescent lighting, and the presence of civilian NPCs whom Jackie can interact with and assist through side quests. A key mechanical detail of the hub: the Darkness powers cannot be used inside the subway station, as the bright lighting suppresses them and Jackie has no interest in harming civilians, forcing the player into a more grounded, human mode of interaction. The station also contains payphones used to progress the story, and returns as a level in the sequel The Darkness II (2012), where it is damaged in an explosion following a firefight.[2]
The Darkness developed a devoted cult following after its release, praised for its atmospheric New York City setting, its uncommonly strong narrative, and the subway hub's role as a quiet respite from the game's violence — an unusual design choice that gave it an emotional texture rare in the genre.
