Background
James Holmes carried out a mass shooting at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 theater in Aurora, Colorado on July 20, 2012, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. Prior to the shooting, Holmes mailed a notebook to his psychiatrist at the University of Colorado containing detailed writings and diagrams outlining his plans, thoughts, and mental state. The notebook was recovered and introduced as evidence at his trial in 2015, at which Holmes was convicted on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Images of the notebook's pages — which included both written text and diagrammatic drawings — were widely reproduced in press coverage of the trial and became one of the more disturbing documentary artifacts of the case to enter public circulation.
