John de Menil (1904–1973) was a French-born art collector and patron who, with Dominique de Menil, supported cultural institutions in Houston.[1] The couple moved there during the Second World War in connection with their family firm, Schlumberger.[2]
Their projects included art teaching at the University of St. Thomas and Rice University, support for civil rights, and the establishment of the Rothko Chapel in 1971. John died in 1973; the Menil Collection opened in 1987.[2]
