Background
Villa Casa Casuarina is a Mediterranean Revival-style villa on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida, built in 1930. Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace purchased the property in 1992 and extensively renovated it, adding a mosaic swimming pool, ornate frescoes, and elaborate gold detailing throughout the interior. The mansion became a symbol of South Beach opulence.
On July 15, 1997, Versace was shot and killed on the front steps of the mansion by serial killer Andrew Cunanan. The murder drew international media coverage and made the property one of the most notorious addresses in Miami. After Versace's death, the estate passed through several owners before operating as a private club and boutique hotel, The Villa by Barton G. The combination of extreme luxury, celebrity association, and violent infamy gives the Versace Mansion a distinctive place in the Remilio collection's catalog of hyper-visible status environments.
