Background

Valhalla is a multiplayer map in Halo 3 (Bungie, 2007), set in a lush forested valley on the Ark — a Forerunner megastructure — featuring two symmetrical bases at opposite ends of an open terrain, a river running through the center, rocky outcroppings, and large Forerunner structures. The map was designed as a spiritual successor to Blood Gulch from Halo: Combat Evolved, one of the most beloved maps in the franchise's history, and inherited that map's reputation for large-scale vehicle combat and Capture the Flag play.[1]

During development the map was given the working title "Curious Gorge" before being finalized as Valhalla — a name chosen to evoke the Norse hall of warriors who rise each day to battle and feast at night, a concept Bungie noted was "remarkably similar to the overall process of multiplayer gameplay." The map was remade as Ragnarok in Halo 4. Valhalla was one of the most popular maps of the Halo 3 era and is closely associated with the game's peak cultural moment in the late 2000s.
