Background

Shenmue is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Sega AM2 under director Yu Suzuki, released for the Sega Dreamcast in Japan in December 1999 and internationally in 2000. Set in Yokosuka, Japan in 1986, the game follows Ryo Hazuki investigating his father's murder, and was notable at release for its unprecedented level of environmental detail — fully modeled interiors, working day-night cycles, and interactive incidental objects throughout its recreation of a Japanese city. The game was the most expensive video game ever produced at the time of its release, with a development budget reported at approximately $47 million.

Shenmue became a foundational text for a generation of game developers and critics interested in world-building and environmental storytelling, and developed a devoted cult following that campaigned for years for a sequel. Its melancholic, hyperrealistic depiction of everyday Japanese life gave it a distinctive visual and emotional identity that remains influential.
