Post-cancelled is a philosophical concept developed by Charlotte Fang that refers to a state of artistic and social freedom achieved after experiencing and surviving social censure or "cancellation".[1] The concept positions cancellation as a transformative experience that, when navigated successfully, leads to newfound creative freedom unbound by social constraints. Within Remilia's theoretical framework, the post-cancelled state represents both a personal liberation and a cultural strategy that challenges institutional censorship.[2] In a 2024 message, Fang stated "the pendulum has now swung back into our corner, leaving the cancelled to inherit the earth... just as prophesied," suggesting an acceptance of the approach.[3]

Origins and development

The concept of post-cancelled emerged from Fang's experiences with social media controversies and cancel culture in the early 2020s. Charlotte Fang began articulating the philosophy around 2020, positioning it as both a personal response to attempted cancellation and a broader artistic strategy for Remilia Corporation's creative endeavors.[4] According to Fang, Remilia had prepared for potential cancellation from the beginning, engaging in "siege preparations to achieve the ultimate post-cancel."[5]

The concept was most comprehensively outlined in Fang's essay "The Cancelled Will Inherit the Earth," which positioned being cancelled as a potential path to artistic authenticity rather than a permanent social exile.[6] In this essay, Fang argues that cancellation can function as a "modern coming of age" that, when navigated successfully, leaves one with greater freedom of expression and association than before.

Core principles

Freedom from social constraints

A central tenet of the post-cancelled philosophy is that surviving cancellation liberates an artist from conforming to mainstream social constraints. Fang describes this as a state where one becomes free to create authentically, having already weathered the worst potential social consequences.[7]

Post-authorship integration

Post-cancelled theory interconnects with Remilia's broader concept of post-authorship, where traditional notions of artistic credit and authorship are rejected in favor of a more fluid, network-oriented approach to creation.[8] In this framework, being post-cancelled allows for greater participation in collaborative creation without concerns about reputation management.

Strategic application

Beyond individual experience, post-cancelled is presented as a strategic approach that can be deliberately invoked. Fang has described how Remilia projects like Remilio Babies were "consciously developed as response to being cancelled," demonstrating the collective's "post-cancel robustness."[9]

Fang has also theorized that self-staged cancellations may become a cultural strategy, where artists deliberately court controversy to access the creative freedom of the post-cancelled state.[10]

Cultural significance

Alternative infrastructure

A key aspect of post-cancelled theory is the need for alternative cultural and economic infrastructure that allows cancelled individuals and collectives to continue their work outside mainstream platforms.[11] This approach has manifested in Remilia Corporation's development of independent publishing platforms, social networks, and economic systems.

Influence on Remilia projects

The concept has informed numerous Remilia projects, most notably the Milady Maker collection, which Fang has described as "a pfp that stands for a right to free posting, a right to free art, a right to have fun online; putting it on gives you immunity to the regime's social censures."[12]

Remilia Chat, a social media platform announced in 2025, was also positioned as an extension of post-cancelled philosophy, designed to create a communication space resistant to the kind of social censure common on mainstream platforms.[13]
