Maf Rothko is a shirt trait in the Milady Maker NFT collection, depicting a colour-blocked turtleneck sweater modelled after the Rothko mohair turtleneck produced by Raf Simons for his autumn-winter 2008 collection. The name combines "Milady" and "Raf," following the collection's convention of renaming brand references with an "M" prefix. A corresponding Maf Creeper trait references the same designer's AW02 collection.

Background

Raf Simons' AW08 collection explored adolescence and the transition into adulthood, drawing on the emotional expressiveness of abstract art. The Rothko sweater is a mohair blend turtleneck featuring horizontal colour blocks referencing the large-format colour field paintings of American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko (1903–1970), whose work is characterized by softly edged rectangles of luminous colour arranged in vertical stacks intended to evoke deep emotional states.[1] The sweater was produced in an orange base colorway for the runway, with the mohair fabrication creating an optical depth in the colour blocks through its complex fibre structure.[2]

Simons' engagement with Rothko reflects his longstanding interest in art history and his consistent practice of translating artistic movements into garment form. The sweater is one of a number of pieces from the AW08 collection that explicitly name their artistic references.
