Galaxy Express 999 (銀河鉄道999) is a manga series by Leiji Matsumoto, serialized in Shōnen King from 1977 to 1981, and adapted into a television anime series and theatrical films. The story follows a young boy named Tetsuro Hoshino who boards the Galaxy Express 999, a steam locomotive that travels through space on a rail line connecting planets, accompanied by the mysterious Maetel. The series is thematically concerned with mortality, the relationship between humanity and technology, and the nature of the soul, using the conceit of a space-travelling steam train as a vehicle for episodic philosophical storytelling.
Matsumoto's work, including Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato, was enormously influential on Japanese popular culture and the science fiction anime genre, and has had sustained influence on subsequent generations of anime creators.
