Rothko Chapel is a background trait in the Redacted Remilio Babies NFT collection, depicting the Rothko Chapel, an interfaith meditative space in Houston, Texas, housing fourteen large-scale paintings by American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko.
Background
The Rothko Chapel was commissioned by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil and designed by architects Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubry, opening in 1971. The octagonal structure houses fourteen paintings by Mark Rothko — his final major commission — executed in deep plum, maroon, and near-black tones on large canvases intended to create an immersive meditative environment.[1] Rothko died by suicide in 1970 before seeing the completed installation. The chapel is nondenominational and hosts visitors of all faiths, serving as both a sacred space and a site of human rights programming. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of spiritual art and architecture of the twentieth century.
The inclusion of the Rothko Chapel as a Remilio background connects to the collection's broader engagement with art history and contemplative aesthetics, consistent with the Maf Rothko trait in Milady Maker, which references Rothko's colour field paintings in the context of a Raf Simons garment.
