Background

Prada Marfa was created in 2005 by the Berlin-based Scandinavian artist duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, commissioned by Art Production Fund and Ballroom Marfa.[1] The structure is a freestanding building modelled after a Prada boutique, constructed from adobe, plaster, and glass, with two display windows containing actual Prada products from the label's autumn-winter 2005 collection. The door is permanently sealed — the structure is intended never to function as a place of commerce. Miuccia Prada granted the artists permission to use the Prada trademark for the work.[2]

The artists described the work as a "pop architectural land art project" critiquing consumerism through the absurdity of placing a luxury boutique in a remote desert landscape. The work was vandalized and looted on its opening night, and required repair and security measures. It has since become one of the most widely photographed public artworks in the United States, appearing in episodes of The Simpsons and Gossip Girl and in photographs by Beyoncé.[3]
