Background

The Georgia Guidestones were commissioned in 1979 by an individual using the pseudonym R.C. Christian, who approached the Elberton Granite Finishing Company with instructions to build a monument to serve as a guide for a post-apocalyptic civilization. The identity of the commissioner was never publicly disclosed.[1] Unveiled on 22 March 1980, the structure consisted of four granite slabs arranged in an X pattern, each over five metres tall, inscribed with ten guidelines in eight languages including English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Traditional Chinese, and Russian. The inscriptions addressed themes including population limits, environmental stewardship, and a unified world language.

The Guidestones attracted consistent attention from conspiracy theorists, who variously interpreted the population guidance as evidence of a New World Order agenda. The structure was repeatedly vandalized over its forty-two-year existence. On 6 July 2022, an explosive device detonated at the site in the early morning, severely damaging one of the upright slabs. The remaining structure was demolished by authorities later the same day for safety reasons. No perpetrator was ever publicly identified.[2]
