Celine (formerly Céline) is a French fashion house specializing in ready-to-wear, leather goods, footwear and accessories. Founded in Paris in 1945 as a made-to-measure children's shoe business by Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard, it later expanded into women's fashion and became part of LVMH in 1996.[1][3][2][4] Its identity has been shaped by the interlocking-C logo introduced in 1973 and by successive creative directors including Michael Kors, Phoebe Philo and Hedi Slimane.[3][2][4]

History

Origins and expansion

In 1945, Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard opened a made-to-measure children's shoe boutique in Paris. During the late 1950s and 1960s, the business expanded into women's footwear, accessories and women's ready-to-wear, including a sportswear collection.[3][2][4] The house introduced its first fragrance, Vent Fou, in 1963, and added bags, belts and gloves in 1966. It also opened a factory in Florence, Italy, to support production.[3]

In 1973, Vipiana introduced the Blazon Chaine logo, an intertwined double-C design whose central pattern referenced the Arc de Triomphe. The house also expanded internationally, opening boutiques outside France.[3][2]

Bernard Arnault invested in Celine in 1987. The house became part of the LVMH group in 1996.[3][2][4]

Creative direction

Michael Kors became Celine's creative director in 1997 and left the position in 2004.[3][2]

Phoebe Philo became creative director in 2008. Her tenure was associated with feminine minimalism, clean silhouettes and architectural designs. The Luggage Tote, launched in 2010, and the Classic Box Bag, introduced in 2011, became notable products of this period.[3][4]

In 2018, Hedi Slimane became Celine's artistic, creative and image director. He removed the accent from the house's name and introduced a direction described in contemporary profiles as more focused on edge, youth culture, music and vintage tailoring.[2][3][4]

Design and products

Celine's product range includes ready-to-wear, leather goods, footwear and accessories.[1][2] The house's interlocking-C emblem, first formalized in the 1970s, was revived in the Triomphe bag. The bag's clasp references the chains around Paris's Arc de Triomphe.[3][4]
