Remilia01 (2023)

Short film anthology produced by Remilia Corporation in 2023

Remilia01 (2023) was an anthology film produced by Remilia Corporation in 2023 as a segment for Angelicism01's Film01. The 8-minute, 41-second experimental short film explored new cinematographic approaches to filming the internet through found content, narrative collage, and AI-generated acting. It was designed as an anthology demonstrating five different processes for what a new net art cinema could look like, incorporating multiple experimental techniques including found footage remixing, collaborative production processes, irreverent subtitling, and AI-generated content.[1] Despite being present in test screenings, Remilia01 was cut from the debut screening of Film01 at Anthology Film Archives in New York City, which led to a public dispute between Charlotte Fang and Angelicism01, marking the end of their creative collaboration.[2]

Background

Film01 was Angelicism01's directorial debut, described as "an abstract documentary about the heart under extinction conditions" and "the first work in cinema to film the internet."[3] The project emerged from the online culture surrounding the Vibe Shift scene that had formed in 2021 in the collaboration between Angelicism01, Remilia Corporation, and the New York downtown art scene.[4] Angelicism01 positioned the work as a representation of "pure cinema" without traditional narrative structure.[5]

Charlotte Fang was asked by Angelicism01 to contribute a segment to Film01 as a continuation of their on-going collaboration. The Remilia01 segment featured texts from several contributors associated with Remilia Corporation, including mny, Mara Barl, Pure, Chensi Fang, Charlotte Fang, Miya Black Hearted Cyber Angel Baby, and Sprite, reflecting the collective's emphasis on collaborative creation.

Remilia contributed to Film01's production in other ways, encouraging its community to provide their own filmed footage and submitting archives of Xiaohongshu found footage collected by Remilia's team. Active Remilia Collective members Angel Kether and Ashley Perry featured extensively as actors in the final production of Film01.[6]

Production

Remilia01 was directed by Charlotte Fang (credited as CFANG), with editing by CFANG and Sonora Sprite. The screenplay was credited to Remilia Collective as a whole, reflecting the group's collaborative and post-authorial approach to creative work.[1] Remilia01 was designed as a more structured counterpart to Film01's overall aesthetic. While Film01 as a whole was characterized by art critic Paige K. Bradley as "a nonnarrative, assiduously edited anthology of TikToks, Instagram Stories, memes, and various viral clips intercut with a small percentage of original footage,"[7] the Remilia01 segment was designed to demonstrate five distinct alternative approaches to filming internet content through a more coherent, self-contained narrative anthology format.

Controversy

Anthology Film Archives screening incident

On June 5, 2023, Film01 had its debut screening at Anthology Film Archives' Courthouse Theater in New York City, but Remilia01 was notably absent from the final cut.[8]

The screening itself was shrouded in mystery and controversy, with attendees required to complete questionnaires and subjected to an approval process before receiving location details only hours before the event.[9] Rumors even circulated about a potential mass shooting at the venue, adding to the ominous atmosphere surrounding the premiere.[10] Prior to the screening, attendees reportedly received a paranoid warning text about the film's content, specifically alluding to the Remilia01 contribution, despite it ultimately being cut from the screening: "...once the hypnosis phase is deep, they will move over to a chapter that is created by Charlotte Fang (disgraced cult-leader/pedophile) who will implant deep triggers and terrible, awful things (though they will look and sound beautiful)."[9]

The screening was reportedly poorly received, with numerous attendees walking out before the end of the film. According to art critic Paige K. Bradley, the audience at the Anthology screening was "not-full" and the reception afterward was "sparse, fizzled out, even glum."[11]

Charlotte Fang attended the screening along with Dasha Nekrasova and Ashley Perry. While Nekrasova and Perry reportedly walked out during the film, Fang remained until the end.[12] Paige Bradley's account in Artforum corroborates that "even one of Film01's more famous stars allegedly walked out of the Anthology screening," likely referring to Nekrasova, and described the reception afterward as "sparse, fizzled out, even glum."[7]

Post-screening confrontation

Following the screening, Charlotte Fang messaged Angelicism01 on Discord to criticize the final cut, suggesting that the filmmaker had deliberately alienated the audience and wasted an opportunity to bring the Vibe Shift scene's artistic energy to wider critical attention. Angelicism01 reportedly responded that Fang's only grievance was the exclusion of Remilia01 and defended the final edit as "perfect."[13] According to reports, Angelicism01 had production difficulties during the making of Film01, including firing his editor late in the production process and having to cut much of the film himself.[14] This detail was allegedly brought up by Charlotte Fang when criticizing the final cut, as the editor who was fired (known as Millime) was active in the Milady Maker community.[15]

The dispute escalated when Angelicism01 took to the Milady Village Discord server to defend against criticism, including making disparaging remarks about Remilia's contribution. Charlotte Fang responded by organizing an impromptu screening of Remilia01 within the Discord server, which allegedly attracted over 500 viewers, significantly more than those who remained through the entirety of the Film01 screening at Anthology Film Archives.[16]

Aftermath

The positive reception of the impromptu Remilia01 screening reportedly led Angelicism01 to escalate personal attacks against Fang, including references to doxxing. Angelicism01 subsequently blocked Fang on Twitter and reached out to a public critic of both Fang and Angelicism01, ex-Remilia member Sophia Vanderbilt, claiming "You were right about Fang." Vanderbilt rebuffed him and publicly posted their direct messages, leading Angelicism01 to block her as well. Angelicism01 deactivated his Twitter account shortly after.[17]

This incident marked a significant falling out between Angelicism01 and the wider Remilia network.[18] It also marked the end of Angelicism01's presence on Twitter, as well as that of his clone accounts, serving as the definitive conclusion of the Vibe Shift scene of 2021-2022. Reviewers noted that "Angelicism isn't really online anymore" in the period immediately following the screening and controversy.[18] Angelicism01 would later reappear on Instagram, where Remilia and Fang were not active.[19]

Despite Angelicism01's initial insistence that the debut cut of Film01 was "perfect," new cuts were later produced and screened internationally, including in Zurich, Paris, and Berlin in 2023, culminating in a simultaneous release of the Paradise Cut in over 20 cities worldwide in August 2024.[20] While Angelicism01's online presence diminished after the New York controversy, Film01 ultimately gained broader international distribution and attention over time.[21]
