Kemonokaki is a hand-drawn profile picture NFT collection created by Oekaki Connect and launched on the Base blockchain in June 2024.[1] The collection features 10,000 unique tokens inspired by kemonomimi and the neo-chibi aesthetic pioneered by Remilia Corporation, with characters based on 19 different anthropomorphic animal species.[2]

The project was minted through scatter.art, marking Oekaki Connect's first major release on the Base blockchain after previous collections on Ethereum.[3]

Development

Kemonokaki originated as a concept for new Oekaki Connect intellectual property intended as a gift for Oekaki Maker holders.[4] The project evolved from initial plans for a rough pixel art style into a fully hand-drawn collection with diverse visual traits. The development team initially considered using AI-assisted generation similar to Oekaki Maker but ultimately decided against it to maintain hand-drawn pixel art textures.[4]

The main artists for Kemonokaki were Kira, Ina, Meow, Karat, GC, Kiv, and Putrid, with secondary art contributions from Lean and Haiku.[4] MRYT, Kvadra, and Funky also contributed artwork, while Haiku and Lean assisted with generation.[4] Tuby handled marketing for the project.[4] The multi-artist team brought varying personal styles that contributed to making each race feel distinctive while maintaining overall cohesion through a shared soft pixel art style.[4]

The collection draws aesthetic inspiration from kemonomimi chibi art, kemono-furry fursuits seen in Japanese fashion communities paired with Lolita coordinates, and fashion subcultures including Rokku and Hime Gyaru.[4] The project incorporates references to anime and gaming franchises as Easter eggs throughout the collection, similar to the approach used in Oekaki Maker.[4]

Design

The collection consists of 10,000 unique hand-drawn NFTs featuring 19 distinct species or races, including standard animal-themed characters as well as fantasy variants such as Goblins with green skin and Mermaids with fantastical skin colors.[2] One race is dedicated to Oekaki Maker, featuring recreations of popular traits from that earlier collection.[4]

Due to the 19 different races each having unique trait sets, the project required a specialized generator for organizing and exporting the large number of traits.[4] The collection also includes rare one-of-one hand-drawn pieces created for members of Oekaki Connect's "royalty" tier.[4]

Launch

Public minting began at 7:00 PM EST on June 21, 2024, with a mint price of 0.025 ETH.[5] Oekaki Connect NFT holders received a 10-minute early access period, while addresses on a friends whitelist (including holders of Remilia collections, Pudgy Penguins, and other affiliated projects) received 5-minute early access.[5]

The project implemented a 40% affiliate program for Oekaki Maker holders, enabling them to earn rewards by promoting mints through referral links.[5] Free mints were provided to existing Oekaki Connect collection holders, with small Base ETH airdrops offered to help users without existing Base funds claim their allocations.[4]

Oekaki Connect selected Base blockchain for the launch citing low gas fees, fast transaction speeds, and stability for building interactive experiences.[2]

Community and licensing

On June 29, 2024, Oekaki Connect released the Kemonokaki License, allowing individual creators and groups who own at least one Kemonokaki NFT to create fan content and derivative works with commercial rights.[6] The license prohibits content damaging to the project's reputation, excessive sexual themes, hate content, and extraction of official assets.[6] Legal entities seeking commercial licensing must contact Oekaki Connect separately.[6]

The collection is part of the broader Oekaki Connect ecosystem, which includes multiple NFT projects sharing aesthetic and cultural connections to anime-inspired internet culture.
