Kagami Academy is a pixel art NFT collection by Remilia Corporation featuring eight characters designed in Japanese street fashion aesthetics.[1] The collection launched on January 12, 2024 as part of the FRUiTS x REMiLiA collaboration during the DIG SHIBUYA art festival in Tokyo.[2] The collection consists of 3,000 NFTs rendered in a 33×44 pixel format on the Ethereum blockchain.[3]
Design and concept

Kagami Academy features eight characters collectively known as the Dessert Club, representing an afterschool club at the fictional Remilia High.[2] The characters are named Cream, Cocoa, Butter, Rose, Peach, Vanilla, Lavender, and Slime, with each character having dessert-themed coloring inspired by gyaru fashion aesthetics.[2] The design explores what the creators describe as "aesthetic-racial clashes" characteristic of the gyaru style through its dessert-themed color palette.[2]
The collection uses a highly constrained 33×44 pixel format intended to be translatable into physical bead art and bag charms, testing the limits of expressing J-Fashion aesthetics within extreme pixel limitations.[2] The design originated shortly after the launch of Milady Maker in August 2021, when it was initially teased but not released.[2]
Development and release
The original concept art for Kagami Academy was created by gutterworld under the direction of Charlotte Fang.[2] The artwork was produced by a team of Remilia contributors including Yuyu, Heartornament, Mei Mei, Lucia, and Example, with creative support from Sam, Tej, Hannah, and Nya.[2] The project was led by Michael Dragovic with Charlotte Fang serving as executive creative director, and development was delivered by the Scatter team.[2]
The collection was revived and completed as a free tie-in to the FRUiTS MiLADY collection for the FRUiTS x REMiLiA pop-up exhibition at DIG SHIBUYA 2024 in Tokyo, Japan.[4]
Minting mechanism
Kagami Academy pioneered a novel minting mechanism tied to the Auctioncore bidding incentive model originally developed for Bonkler.[2] During the FRUiTS MiLADY auctions, each bid on the companion FRUiTS MiLADY collection provided bidders with a claim for two $KAGAMI tokens.[2] These tokens could then be burned to mint Kagami Academy NFTs, with each mint requiring two tokens.[2]
The $KAGAMI token was designed as a burn mechanism specifically for minting Kagami Academy NFTs, with no plans for use in future official Remilia releases.[2] After the FRUiTS MiLADY auctions concluded, remaining Kagami Academy NFTs became available to mint for free to holders of Remilia assets and Milady derivative projects, including Milady Maker, Remilio Babies, Bonkler, Yayo Corp, Pixelady Maker, and Shishi.[5]
License
Kagami Academy is released under the Viral Public License, an open-source license developed within the Remilia ecosystem.[2]
